We finally have a winner in the WSOP Europe event that never wanted to end ... the 10K Mixed-Max event was won by Jonathan Aguiar (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: 57th) earlier today - Aguiar defeated fellow poker pro Brandon Cantu (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: T-27th) two days after they were first supposed to settle things ... following a six-hour heads-up duel Saturday, the players agreed (sort of) to return once each player had been eliminated from the Main Event which started on Sunday.
Although Aguiar seemed satisfied with this ruling, Cantu was none too pleased with the decision by WSOPE officials. Cantu wanted to return on Sunday to play it out in hopes that they would be able to register late for the Main Event on Day 1B.
But that certainly wasn't the first heated moment of heads-up play. Earlier on Saturday ... a few hands after Aguiar spiked a miracle river tree to double-up and take the lead from Cantu, Cantu called Aguiar out, claiming that he was (Aguiar) was playing so bad to which Aguiar responded with a comment comparing Cantu to Phil Hellmuth - the two exchanged a few more heated words (including Aguiar challenging Cantu to a live heads-up cash game - more of his later!) ...
Things sort of calmed down after that - that is, until the casino had to close at 5AM - that's where the players had their next exchange, the one we first described above.
The players reconvened earlier today to finally settle things. Aguiar finally won the event that started almost a week ago! Cantu didn't take the defeat very lightly and gave quite an emotional interview to PokerNews. Cantu then took to Twitter to continue his rant again Aguiar.
Both players have agreed to meet up again at the Festa al Lago at Bellagio later this month to settle their issues - playing that heads-up cash game they both spoke during Saturday's play.
Lost in the shuffle was the play of other players who collected Player of the Year points in the event.
Marvin Rettenmaier (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: 2nd) added 10 points to his 2012 total, inching closer to our current POY leader Daniel Smith.
Roger Hairabedian (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: 42nd) continued to run good in France. After wins at WPT Mazagan and a 5K PLO win here at WSOPE last week, Big Roger lost his semi-final match, finishing tied for third in the event.
Faraz Jaka (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: 37th), Konstantin Puchkov (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: T-193rd), Martin Jacobson (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: 399th) and Kristijonas Andrulis (2012 QJ/PTPR Rank: 128th) all earned Player of the Year points in the event as well.
