WPT LAPC: THE DOCTOR IS IN - SANDS LOOKS FOR FIRST FOR FIRST WPT TITLE

PHOTO (credit BJ Nemeth)/SOURCE: WPT.com

Yet another successful Matt Savage hosted event is about to come to an end. Many star players of the poker world made their way to sunny California the past few weeks, trying to become the next LAPC Champion.

After five days of battle, the Main Event is down to the final six participants.

The chip leader is WPT Boot Camp graduate Sean Jazayeri. Not many people expect Jazayeri to win today so, Jazayeri may just feel like he's on a freeroll. Jazayeri shouldn't be taken lightly - he does have quite a few live event scores on his resume, including a second place finish at the Wynn Classic last season.

The spotlight today may very well be on David "Doc" Sands. After a successful run at the WSOP Main Event last summer, it seems that Sands is part of everyone's list of poker players on the verge of taking over. Sands (2011 PTPR Rank: 10th) earned seven PTPR Scores in 2011, including a very nice run at the Five Diamond Classic to end the 2011 season.

Doc (pictured, right) has a little over 4M in chips to start final table play.

The man right on Sands' heels is star player Noah Schwartz. Schwartz (2011 PTPR Rank: 828th) - who won a PCA PLO side event in January - is currently 14th on the 2012 PTPR Poker Tournament Player of the Year Leaderboard.

WSOP bracelet winners Dan Kelly (2011 PTPR Rank: 539th) and Jason Somerville (2011 PTPR Rank: 77th) are both seeking a first WPT title of their career.

Jason Burt is the remaining player at the final table. Burt (2011 PTPR Rank: NR) earned his big payday in 2009, finishing fifth in the 15K WPT Festa al Lago at Bellagio.

Final table play live from Commerce Casino is set to begin at 4PM PT today!

FINAL TABLE SEAT ASSIGNMENTS/CHIP COUNTS

WPT LAPC: PHIL IVEY'S BUBBLE BURSTS

PHOTO (credit BJ Nemeth)/SOURCE: WPT.com

As soon as the LAPC Main Event's first hand was dealt, all eyes have been on Phil Ivey. Ivey was playing his first tournament in the US since Black Friday and the subsequent Full Tilt Poker fiasco.

Ivey (2011 PTPR Rank: NR) was in contention right from the start of the tournament, and it looked like the Ivey of old had returned to the US, however, Ivey' stack size started to take a stumble late on Saturday and again on Sunday - culminating in Ivey being the bubble boy, busting one out of the money, as Sunday play came to an end.

Tuan Phan has the chip lead as Monday play is set to being at the WPT LAPC. Phan (2011 PTPR Rank: 835th) won the WSOP Circuit Atlantic City Main Event last season.

Jason Somerville has been in the news lately, recently announcing on his blog that he was gay. Somerville (2011 PTPR Rank: 77th) - who won a WSOP bracelet last summer - had a fantastic Sunday, chipping up to second place after three days of play.

Former NAPT Los Angeles Champion Joe Tehan (2011 PTPR Rank: 266th) sits third in chips while Noah Schwartz is sixth. Schwartz (2011 PTPR Rank: 828th) currently sits 14th on the 2012 PTPR Tournament Poker Player of the Year Leaderboard - he won a PCA side event in January.

2012 LAPC: SELBST WINS ALL-STAR GAME, DUHAMEL EARNS ANOTHER STRIPE

SOURCE: COMMERCETOURNAMENTS.com

It's only February but we have already found our winner for Tournament of the Year for 2012!! Chidwick, Stout, Selbst, Duhamel, Poche, Siniak, Karr, Brikis and Jaka - those were the names, from seat 1 to 9 at the LAPC 5K NLH Prelim event final table on the eve of the WPT LAPC Main Event.

It was a who's who of North American poker and they didn't disappoint. Making it into the wee hours of the Los Angeles morning, they battled it out. When the dust settled and the smog cleared, Vanessa Selbst was the big winner, but, runner-up Jonathan Duhamel proved that January was no fluke.

Selbst has been long recognized as one of the top poker players in the world, back-to-back winner at NAPT Mohegan Sun and Partouche Grand Final Champ, Selbst (2011 PTPR Rank: 40th) certainly has some impressive victories on the circuit - did we mention she's also won a WSOP bracelet in PLO?

For Duhamel, it's the continuation of the dream season. Remember a few years back when it seemed like Phil Ivey or Daniel Negreanu were at every final table? You start getting the feeling that Duhamel (2011 PTPR Rank: 71st) is on the same path in 2012. The 2010 WSOP World Champion has already crossed the 200-point mark for 2012, and it's still February! Just to give you an example on how Duhamel is dominating the circuit, 2011 PTPR Player of the Year Will "The Thrill" Failla had 75 PTPR Points at this point last season, Duhamel just collected his 245th. It certainly looks like the kid from just outside Montreal is destined for greatness.

Faraz Jaka also rockets up the standings. Sitting 8th heading into the 5K, Jaka (2011 PTPR Rank: 2090th) managed a fifth place finish in the event, moving him to 3rd overall on the 2012 PTPR Tournament Player of the Year Leaderboard.

EPT COPENHAGEN: NEUVILLE LEADS DEFENDING CHAMP TURENIEC, OTHERS TO THE TOP 24

PHOTO (credit Neil Stoddart)/SOURCE: POKERSTARS.com

Belgium's Pierre Neuville - Team PokerStars Pro - has taken over the chip lead as Day 3 has come to an end at EPT Copenhagen. A veteran on the poker circuit, Neuville (2011 PTPR Rank: 234th) has surprisingly never won a significant event on tour. Neuville has enjoyed some success on the EPT - of note, he finished second to Antonio Matias at EPT Vilamoura back in 2009.

WSOP November Niner Martin Staszko finds himself in the Top 10 after Thursday's play. Staszko (2011 PTPR Rank: 182nd) - who finished second in the Main Event - built an extreme short stack into a Top 10 stack today.

One person to keep an eye on Friday is defending champ Michael Tureniec. Tureniec (2011 PTPR Rank: 112th) has quietly been amassing chips and currently sits 15th out of 24. Tureniec is about 500K off-pace but, you should never count out a former champion.

Our feature player from Wednesday's post died a horrible death (at least, her chips did) on Thursday. Melanie Weisner went from the penthouse to the outhouse in no time - the hand of death coming at the hands of Steve O'Dwyer when Weisner's ace-queen ran into O'Dwyer's aces.

NOTABLE CHIP COUNTS
Pierre Neuville 780,000

@PTPRPOKER ON THE RADIO!

On last week's Poker EH! on QuadJacks Radio, Jeremy (@evhero) and I were joined by PokerStars Super Nova Elite player Kristen Bicknell...

PokerStars Super Nova Elite player Kristen Bicknell talks to us about her SNE status, the pressure on keeping her SNE card, how she balances poker and life and where things are going for the Canadian poker pro.

Kristen Bicknell (@krissyb24poker) is a PokerStars Super Nova Elite player from Canada’s Nation Capital, Ottawa. Recently back from a Caribbean and an Alaskan cruise, Kristen explains that the life of a Super Nova Elite player isn’t all fun and games.

The UltimateGrinders.com poker coach reveals that the pressure on keeping her SNE status can be detrimental to her health. Her latest ascension to SNE status (this past November and December) lead her to having to schedule time for shower, eat and sleep – scheduling life around poker! She was absolutely pokered out at that point, explaining the recent 15-days away from the on-line felt.

VENETIAN DEEPSTACK: THAT'S MORE LIKE IT! AFTER WPT 6TH, FERRERA WINS THE DSE!

SOURCE: THEHENDONMOB.com

Only a short week ago, many poker experts were shocked when Keith Ferrera was the first player eliminated at the final table at WPT Lucky Hearts at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.

Ferrera was pegged by most - with all due respect to his final table opponents - as the man to beat at the final table yet, there he is was, collecting his sixth place paycheque, having to wait for his first win of 2012.

The 2009 Wynn Classic winner didn't take long to make amends. Ferrera (2011 PTPR Rank: NR) has followed up his WPT Lucky Hearts 6th with a win at Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza Main Event.

A total of 254 players entered the popular Vegas event, Ferrera picks up just under 140K with the victory.

2011 PTPR Tournament Player of Year Will "The Thrill" Failla earned his first PTPR Points of the season, finishing fourth. Failla (2011 PTPR Rank: 1st) beat out a monster field in the Borgata $500 re-entry event last month - unfortunately, that event did not qualify for PTPR Points.

Kenny Shih, Ryan Julius, Matt Marafioti, Carter Gill, Dan O'Brien, Matt Berkey and Gavin Smith are some notable names that cashed in the event.

TOP 10 PAYOUTS (USD)
1st - Keith Ferrera $139,720
2nd - John Taitt $86,161
3rd - Kenneth Auker $58,217

EPT COPENHAGEN: IS THIS FINALLY MELANIE WEISNER'S TIME TO SHINE?

PHOTO (credit Neil Stoddart)/SOURCE: POKERSTARS.com

Melanie Weisner is widely recognized as one of the top live tournament pros on the circuit, yet, most are surprised when they learn that Weisner has yet to pickup that one big score on the circuit, which is something that most assumed had already happened given her skill.

Weisner has been close before - most recently starting final day play with the chip lead at a NLH Bounty Side Event at the Aussie Millions. It goes without saying that Weisner is one of the best players without a major victory.

This may be about to change. Weisner (2011 PTPR Rank: 1155th) holds the chip lead with 72 players left EPT Copenhagen, presented by PokerStars.com. Weisner takes a 48K chip into Day 3, she has accumulated an impressive 368K in chips the first two days of the tournament.

WPT Venice Grand Prix fourth place finisher Simon Ravnsbaek sits second in chips. Ravnsbaek (2011 PTPR Rank: 283rd) won the Danish Poker Championship in this very casino last October. Ravnsbaek also earned a third place finish at WPT Vienna last March.

Another familiar face to the Danish crowd at Casino Copenhagen rounds out the Top 3. Kevin Iacofano (2011 PTPR Rank: 238th) - who finished fourth in this event last year - is about 15K in chips behind Ravnsbaek.

Of the four players featured in yesterday's EPT Copenhagen recap, only two survived second day play - Steve O'Dwyer and Juha Helppi. Roberto Romanello and Marcel Bjerkmann were both eliminted during Day 2.

EPT COPENHAGEN: O'DWYER TAKES CONTROL OF DAY 1 IN DENMARK

SOURCE: POKERSTARS.com

Steve O'Dwyer is looking to pickup where he left off at the end of last season as he came oh so close to capturing the 2011 PTPR Tournament Poker Player of the Year crown - finishing second at WPT Venice.

The Final Table has been set at UKIPT Galway and Canadian Nick Abou Risk is looking for the triple!

Abou Risk (2011 PTPR Rank: NR) is the defending champion - winning the event in December of 2010 ... he also won UKIPT Edinburgh in August of 2010 - Abou Risk is seeking his third UKIPT title in 18 months - quite the accomplishment.

It's Final Table time down in Brazil! All eyes will be on Sao Paulo on Monday as Kid Poker Daniel Negreanu has a decent chip stack heading into Final Table play at the LAPT Grand Final.

Day 3 play is on the horizon at the PokerStars United Kingdom and Irealand Poker Tour (UKIPT) Galway NLH Main Event and it's seems as though the Radisson Hotel has been invaded by qualifiers!

LAPT GRAND FINAL: PIMENTA LEADS WHILE KID POKER, RUCA TRENDING

It's Carnival time in Sao Paulo! The Carnival Poker Festival is playing host to the Latin American Poker Tour Season Four Grand Final where 367 players made their way to the Sheraton WTC Sao Paulo on Friday to duke it out.

After two days of action, we're in the money and down to the final 24 players.

Caio Pimenta leads the way. Pimenta (2011 PTPR Rank: NR) - who won a LAPT Mar del Plata prelim event back in 2009 - is the only player over 600K in chips heading into Sunday's play where we will play down to a final table.

KID POKER A CONTENDER
Fresh off his now famous "poker rant" on the current state of affairs over at Full Tilt Poker, Kid Poker himself, Daniel Negreanu held the chip lead for a bit on Saturday. Seems like Negreanu's promise to get focused and return amongst poker's elite on the live tournament circuit.

Negreanu (2011 PTPR Rank: NR) holds the 10th position heading into Day 3 play.

2011 WPT Bratislava runner-up Mayu Roca also appears on the Top 10 leaderboard. Roca (2011 PTPR Rank: 377th) takes a little more than 400K to the final table.

NOTABLE CHIP COUNTS
